I am 2nd Generation Irish Canadian !! My Family both Sides from the South & North !! The Ironic Part is that All Canadians know England is Occupied the Irish Grounds for 900 Years !! I often chuckle at England's Arrogance how they tried to Re-write the Irish's History !! The Part I am Confused is People label each other Provo's or Catholics ETC.. as if it was a Race ?? It is not it is a Faith !! The Irish that know their History know that before the Brits for 900 Years there was the Romans us Celts had fought for a 1000 Years !! True Irish are Celts and their Faith is Pagan !! So I can see that this War started Long Before England with the Romans trying to invade and Occupy the Celtic Grounds !! When I see an Irish Person here in Canada they say they are from Northern Ireland and they say they are Irish !!! Even Protestants say this !! Even though they are all suppose to be British which none Admits !! LOL !! So Who Cares what Faith you are it is not a Race !!! It is A Religion !! Rome did Nothing for Ireland and Neither did England but divide People using Religion !!! This 900 Year War was never Faith it was always about Occupation of Irish Ground !!! Take Down the Union Jack and give Northern Ireland back to the Irish !! Catholic & Protestants leave your Faiths at Home and be the Irish People you all claim to be !!!

I hope that the fighting doesn't really start up again, that would definately be a tragedy. 2 of my favorite singers are from Northern Ireland and still live there so I hope they arn't affected by this and never will be, just like I hope nobody else is harmed or affected in any negative way.

To Alan of XX: Gerry Adams & the Provos are NOT republicans. They proved that with the signing away of the 6 counties in the "Good Friday Agreement." The Brits should leave, period. It was never their land anyway. Their continuing occupation is the cause of all the "troubles." And by the way, Opus Dei is a religious organization of Catholics so why would a non-Catholic want to join? Also, the AOH does not bar non-Catholics from joing but the Orange Order most certainly does bar Catholics from joining?

I found this article very fair - the comments above are from died in the wool marxist `Republicans`. The very fact that the dissidents are trying to kill Catholic Police Officers to intimidate Catholics from supporting and joining the police is evidence of this. Neither are the `Troubles` about `British occupation` but rather the IRA`s until recently, refusal to deal with the fact that Northern Irish Protestants /& Unionists ( there are Catholics and others not just Protestants) right to self determination. Nor do they mention the fact that the IRA alone not including the other Republican paramilitaries accounted for 60% of of all deaths during the Troubles ( look up the University of Ulstr CAIN website which is all about the troubles ), nor the IRA collaboration with FARC narco terrorists in Columbia, the PLO in Palestine, Gerry Adams friendship with Fidel Castro, IRA involvement with the North Korea communist super dollar plot. The reality is that IRA cannot bomb the people of Northern Ireland into any political settlement. Only by persuading the majority of the population of Northern Ireland to the merits of their proposals will they ever achieve their aspirations. P.S The Orange Order is no more sectarian than the Ancient Order of Hibernians or the Knights of Columbus or Opus Dei.

Weak and Inaccurate Journalism

In total agreement with Jane. Thomas K. Grose’a astounding simplification of the political and social realities facing the north of Ireland along with his loose grip on the facts is a prime example of how the ‘Troubles’ are repeatedly misunderstood and misrepresented by the media. No wonder people in other parts of the world are unable to fully comprehend the roots, issues and complexities of this issue as it’s so rarely explained to them in a comprehensive, non-pejorative way.

Factually incorrect and no understanding of issues.

This may be the most one-sided article I have ever seen published. It is clear that the author has absolutely no understanding of the cause of "The Troubles" which is Britain's continuing occupation of six Irish counties.

The author also has incorrect factual information on many issues, e.g. the Catholic percentage of the current police service. The majority of those Catholic officers are Polish and other Eastern European nationals, not Irish citizens.

The author’s claim that Catholics historically distrusted and disliked the RUC because it was considered anti-republican is simply wrong. The RUC/PSNI was and is distrusted and disliked because of its entrenched sectarianism – collusion in loyalist killings of nationalists and Catholics, harassment of nationalist activists, lack of and slow response to crime scenes with Catholic victims, etc., etc., etc. It has been estimated that 12-15% of PSNI officers are members of the Orange Order, a highly sectarian, anti-Catholic organization that continues to have its annual Catholic-bashing July 12th bonfires and parades, asserting as their God-given right the right to force their triumphfullist marches through Catholic neighborhoods against the will of the residents.

The governing of the Six Counties by a foreign occupier – Britain – is illegitimate. Britain partitioned Ireland against the will of its people and gerrymandered a Protestant majority in the north by including six of the nine counties of Ulster in its statelet, ‘Northen Ireland.’ The RUC/PSNI is simply one piece of a sectarian anti-Catholic, anti-nationalist government ‘justice’ system.

The author's statement that the 'Good Friday Agreement' is “rightfully considered proof positive that negotiations can bring entrenched sectarian wars to peaceful ends" is more than debatable. There is more of a stalemate in the Six Counties than true peace. History has shown us over and over again that there can never be peace without justice and there is no way that anyone can spin the current situation in the north of Ireland as justice.
