knife crime

i think its stupid people say they only carry incase they need it but if no one carried them it wouldnt be a problem

how many people have been killed

it's true

more people have been murdered in London this year than soldiers killed in Afghanistan this year. I live here, I've seen knife crime, I've been a victim of it and it happens every day.

Media and panics

Following on from what Jon wrote to Nicole: I am not all sure of how serious the London problem is, and where it is heading, but I do know that this is a textbook case of a sociologist's "moral panic", except that it is fuelled by the media not by society. I found the idea that someone would not leave LA for London something on the borderline between sad and amusing. Let's have a little reality check here.

I think the article here was excellent, surprisingly good. except for the headline. I have a sense that the editor commissioned an article on what everyone else was saying, but fortunately the journalist wrote a very balanced account.

I have not seen other US media reports on this (as far as I know the New York Times, all I do read, has not covered it). I would be grateful if others pointed it out these out to me.

Putting hysteria into context...

Nicole, I'm sorry that media hysteria caused you to miss out on what would have been a fantastic holiday. As a student currently living in London, no-one I know has ever been threatened by someone with a knife, and have never known anyone to carry one either.

Incidentally, the homicide rate in London is still significantly lower than in New York and LA and is, in fact, falling. Knife crime is also down 14% over the last 12 months (police figures). There will always be isolated horror stories, but this time they seem to have gotten totally in the way of the bigger picture.

now you guys should understand why chineses govment don't cancel death penalty.

when criminal realised they won't suffer death penalty after killed someone.

so they think it's no big deal only bad thing will be hold in prison .

How about a return to rational thought!

Sure,..make another law to fix what the last one did not. While the Brits are at it they should pass ten laws, each one further resticting the freedom of lawful citizens as well as their ability to defend themselves. You can take away lawfully owned firearms, Menacing knives, Kitchen knives, Cricket bats, Steel toed boots, on and on and on. Billions of people throughout time have died at the hands of other men using pointed stick and rocks. I think the news article is showing that trend. Yet the British still scratch their heads and clamor for more restrictions to be levied on only themselves,..that is the law abiding citizen. Do you think the criminal element winces at the implimentation of yet another law? I don't,...more than likely the biggest reaction a criminal may give is to roll their eye's. Even criminals have become jaded and uncaring to bad legislation. Way to go! Enable the worst of society. The "Good Guys" cannot "Bad Guys" with words and high notions.

Everyone wants to blame an inanimate object or the government.

WHY? Why are people killing each other? That is the question.

It's proof that, regardless of laws and weapon regulations, humans will kill each other with their bare hands if they see fit.
