Indian State Dinner Will 'Set the Tone' of Obama's Style
With just six weeks left before they host their first state visit and state dinner, the Obamas are scrambling for tips to run a successful event, one the world will be watching for hints on the new first family's entertaining style. Luckily for them—and us—there is the White House Historical Association, which charts these events and has just produced a fact sheet on how to throw a winning state dinner.
Says the Association: "To this day, presidents and first ladies continue to set the tone of their administration's entertainment. The first lady and her staff are responsible for the elaborate planning and attention behind the glitter and ceremony of the State Dinner. These formal dinners involve the creation of invitations and guest lists, menus, flowers, table settings, seating arrangements and entertainment for the evening. The first lady works closely with her social secretary, the executive residence staff and the State Department to coordinate every detail of this very special event."
The dinner is planned for November 24, just days before Thanksgiving and the traditional post-Thanksgiving weekend of decorating for Christmas in the White House.
