Conservatives Hit ABC News for 'Obamamercial'

Posted June 17, 2009

There's a growing controversy over ABC's plan to broadcast a healthcare special out of the White House next week. Critics are calling the special an "Obamamercial." Now conservatives are demanding a chance to at least run ads before or during the special but claim they are being turned away. Rick Scott, chairman of Conservatives for Patients' Rights, just issued this statement:

"It is unfortunate—and unusual—that ABC is refusing to accept paid advertising that would present an alternative viewpoint for the White House health care event. Health care is an issue that touches every American and all potential pieces of legislation have carried a price tag in excess of $1 trillion of taxpayers' money. The American people deserve a healthy, robust debate on this issue and ABC's decision—as of now—to exclude even paid advertisements that present an alternative view does a disservice to the public. Our organization is more than willing to purchase ad time on ABC to present an alternative viewpoint and our hope is that ABC will reconsider having such viewpoints be part of this crucial debate for the American people. We were surprised to hear that paid advertisements would not be accepted when we inquired and we would certainly be open to purchasing time if ABC would reconsider."

death toll associated with nationalized healthcare

Whenever I hear people comment on how many people die without national healthcare I wonder if they realize how many will die because of it. National healthcare will not ensure that all sick people are taken care of immediately.

Germany and Canada have shown the time-frame to actually get to a doctor can be lethal to those with a serious illness. The overloaded systems may require a six month wait, even for those with an aggressive illness like cancer. The six months that private health care could be treating the patient are squandered on waiting and ensure the demise of those who might otherwise be saved if allowed to use private medicine.

I understand Germany has actually had to allow private insurance for those who can afford it (hmm sounds familiar) to address such concerns of their population. I understand from a Canadian friend that Canada is also looking at options of tiered coverage to allow for private medicine.

I also read an article last year about Canada having to send pregnant women with serious complications to American hospitals in Washington State because of overload in the system. Canada not only had to pay for the treatments, but in-hospital stays and the women had to leave their families behind.

What will Canada do if they can no longer send their sick here for the coverage they can't provide. Worse yet, what will we do and where will we send our sick?

Unfortunately, we are too quick sometimes to see the flaws in our current system and too slow to see the faults of a quick-fix. Let us learn from other countries mistakes and not have to suffer as they have to come to the conslusion that as imperfect as it may be, our current system of private healthcare does in fact prove to be the best system yet created.
