Palin Spars With Critics Over Ethics Complaints

Posted June 22, 2009

ANCHORAGE, Alaska—A national campaign fueled by a conservative Web site is helping Gov. Sarah Palin with the expense of legal fees she has run up defending herself against ethics complaints.

The campaign brought in more than $100,000 to the defense fund, called the Alaska Fund Trust, in the past week.

A formal "webathon" fundraiser wrapped up Sunday night but Conservatives4Palin says it will continue publicizing the effort with a goal of raising $500,000.

Palin in March said her legal debts had climbed past $500,000.

Kristan Cole, the trustee for the legal defense fund, says it's her sense that the bills now exceed $600,000.

Palin supporters call the attacks frivolous.
