President Obama

Obama Walks a Fine Line in Response to Turmoil in Iran

Posted June 22, 2009

There is no doubt that some injustices have occurred in the election and its aftermath. But Obama's cautious response appears to be in line with public opinion at home. "Americans' instincts are not to have presidents do things that are overly provocative and that make hostilities more likely," says Democratic pollster Geoff Garin. "Americans are inclined to stay out of other people's problems." That may not be possible in Iran for much longer, but it's a line that Obama hopes to walk as long as he can.

Damned if you do...

I think Obama took a good line on Iran. Regardless of the election outcome (Ahmadinejad or Mousavi), Iran's stance would not have changed much. Although Mousavi may have been more amenable to negotiations, and therefore a better longer term prospect. Iranian authorities and the Supreme Leader would never admit to being responsible for the protests, so external actors had to be blamed, even to the extent of complicity in the shooting of Neda. There is good analysis on www.asiachroniclenews.com. You should have a look.

Great Poker playing indeed, huh !?

And Ahmadinijad still blamed the west, so much for not giving the appearance of meddling.

They are going to say you meddled regardless because conspiracy theories is their bread and butter.
