Obama Heads to Europe to Pitch Economic Plan at G-20
On his first major foreign trip as president, Obama faces some doubts
Crucial to the United States is getting help from Europe for the war in Afghanistan. But European nations are unlikely to send any additional combat forces, according to Charles Kupchan, senior fellow for Europe studies at CFR. It is more likely, Kupchan said at a media briefing this week, that various nations will agree to other forms of support.
As for Turkey, the final stop on the trip, the importance will be in Obama's tone. "The entire Islamic world will be watching to see what kind of message he gives," says Bulent Aliriza, a scholar at CSIS, "and whether he will, indeed, move away from the confrontational relationship that characterized the relationship between the U.S. and the Islamic world during the days of President Bush."
All in all, Obama's challenges in Europe and Turkey would be daunting even for a president with years of foreign policy experience. Obama has next to none. And it is far from clear that he will return home with much to show for his first big-time venture into world affairs.
