MEXICO, why is this coming as a surprise/ why Americans should care

probably time to consider the ramnifications of a chaotic collapsed Mexico with as much attention we give Iraq. This has the potential of having very real negative consequences in the very near future/ find someplace to go for spring break.

This information is current as of today, Sun Feb 22 13:15:22 2009. Sun Feb 22 11:35:52 2009.

Some recent Mexican army and police confrontations with drug cartels have resembled small-unit combat, with cartels employing automatic weapons and grenades. Large firefights have taken place in many towns and cities across Mexico but most recently in northern Mexico, including Tijuana, Chihuahua City and Ciudad Juarez. During some of these incidents, U.S. citizens have been trapped and temporarily prevented from leaving the area. The U.S. Mission in Mexico currently restricts non-essential travel to the state of Durango and all parts of the state of Coahuila south of Mexican Highways 25 and 22 and the Alamos River for U.S. government employees assigned to Mexico. This restriction was implemented in light of the recent increase in assaults, murders, and kidnappings in those two states. The situation in northern Mexico remains fluid; the location and timing of future armed engagements cannot be predicted.

A number of areas along the border are experiencing rapid growth in the rates of many types of crime. Robberies, homicides, petty thefts, and carjackings have all increased over the last year across Mexico generally, with notable spikes in Tijuana and northern Baja California. Ciudad Juarez, Tijuana and Nogales are among the cities which have recently experienced public shootouts during daylight hours in shopping centers and other public venues. Criminals have followed and harassed U.S. citizens traveling in their vehicles in border areas including Nuevo Laredo, Matamoros, and Tijuana.

The situation in Ciudad Juarez is of special concern. Mexican authorities report that more than 1,800 people have been killed in the city since January 2008. Additionally, this city of 1.6 million people experienced more than 17,000 car thefts and 1,650 carjackings in 2008. U.S. citizens should pay close attention to their surroundings while traveling in Ciudad Juarez, avoid isolated locations during late night and early morning hours, and remain alert to news reports. A recent series of muggings near the U.S. Consulate General in Ciudad Juarez targeted applicants for U.S. visas. Visa and other service seekers visiting the Consulate are encouraged to make arrangements to pay for those services using a non-cash method.

immigration

I was a young boy during the "bracero" epoca. I got to work with them in the fields. Our country was developed with people from all over the world. All seeking a better life, religious freedom and opportunity. Their work was hard and undesired by those already here. Their labor was only looked at as lowly and not as a necessity. No one questioned the need but only the quality of life these people projected. Those who had better means never admired the sacrifice placed on their lives to provide for their loved ones in their homes. America is beautiful and bountiful and how it has spoiled many in our society. We demand alot and find it hard to give our best effort to continue enjoying our fruits. Our soldiers are putting their lives on the line everyday, many because of our economic state and others simply for the love of country. The USA must open its eyes and see that there are still people willing to sacrfice their lives and families so we all can enjoy the freedoms many of us don't want to sacrifice ourselves for. Give me, give me has become a right for many without putting out the effort. We should accept our responsiblitiy to society and enjoy the sacrifice needed each of us. Love one another and honor one another for the plied for survival is equal for all.

ECONOMY

THIS IS WHY OUR ECONOMY IS IN THE TANK THEY ARE GETTING ALL THE BENIFITS FOR FREE I LIVE IN THE INNER CITY AND I SEE MOST OF THE PEOPLE IN THE SURBURBS DONT SE IT BECAUSE THEY CANT AFFORD TO LIVE THERE SO WAKE UP BLEEDING HEARTS

My two cents worth

When are our politicians going to get wise about illegal immigration?

I am a supporter of LEGAL immigration; it's the sweat, blood, and sacrifice of generations of great LEGAL immigrants who made this country what it is today, and to this day immigrants play a vital role in our nations continued growth and excellence.

However, I find it sickening that, unlike my great great grandfather from Serbia, and many others like him who EARNED the privilige of being an American, these illegal immigrants are somehow owed something because they risked their lives to get hear via the Rio Grande and thousands of miles of deserts?

If our politicians were to act as they are supposed to, as elected officials instead of appointed royalty, they would vote unanimously to simplify our immigration system. Let hard work, loyalty, and a desire to be an American lead over someone putting their hand out to receive entitlements they should not be entitled to.

Furthermore, our welfare system needs to be overhauled as well; first and foremost, if you're illegal you don't get hand outs (excluding children; all children should be covered by health care, able to eat, and be educated, etc. These issues should not be held against children who are here with their parents). As for our own citizens milking welfare, three words: GET TO WORK! Every day I see signs in Taco Bell, McDonalds, Big 5 sports, saying "help wanted, apply within", yet I walk down my cities street and see some fit, healthy, 20 something year old American male with a sign with some sob story about needing help. "APPLY WITHIN" and get off the street, you lazy, good for nothing leech.

America is the greatest nation on the planet, and it should be a continuing source of inspiration for ALL the world's citizens. However, it should not be a free pass to a better life, but a shimmering beacon of light that shines on a source of hope for millions across the globe.

Give us your tired and your weak, not your lazy and worthless. We have enough of those of our own.

mexico

What exactly is it that americans have worked so hard for Albert ? Freedom? Personally I think anyone hiring Illegals should be arrested and jailed, they are breaking the law. Blaming people who cross a river to work and feed their families illegally or not is rather shortsighted. If the economy got worse in South carolina but you could get a job in North carolina would you go? The real problem between the US and Mexico is the corruption endemic in the mexican governemnt, givingthem more money to fight drug cartels is not the answer.

Immigrant labor from Mexico

The fact that we have so many illegal workers from Mexico is explained by basic economics. There are jobs here that are being filled by these workers, anywhere between 12-15 million of them. Its ironic how all of these so called free marketers are so up in arms about these people coming over to mow our lawns, clean our houses, or watch our children while we go off to work. In reality we need these people here, because we keep offering them jobs. Its sickening the way they are villified and forced to risk their lives to come here and service our needs. Its time we recognize the role that basic economics plays in this mess, and adjust our policies accordingly. Keep out the criminals, but let honest hardworking people come here to pay taxes and play by the rules. Who knows, it might force the rest of us to get off the couch and better ourselves to be able to compete, you know, like the free market is supposed to function.

Mexico

Obama needs to look after legal Americans and not be in a hurry to give what Americans have worked so hard for and hand to illegals. They haven't put into the system so why do Americans have to support them. Let them in the country the legal way and earn their own way and I have no problem with them living here.
