Sexually Transmitted Diseases and Murders On the Rise in New York City

Murder is up. So is syphilis. But city streets are cleaner and quieter, according to the preliminary mayor's management report, which was released Tuesday.

The myriad data show how each city agency measured up for the first four months of the fiscal year - July to October - compared with the same period last year.

NYPD posted a nearly 11% increase in murders, counting 188 during that period.

The Health Department reported a 30% rise in syphilis cases, or 378 total. The Law Department had a 14% increase in tort claims, spending $173,170 on settlements.

Still, the Sanitation Department found that 96% of streets are "acceptably clean," an all-time record.

The Department of Environmental Protection experienced a 24% drop in noise complaints. Calls to 311 hit 5.4 million, a 12% increase.

The report is an early indicator of how the city will fare for the year and can be reviewed at www.nyc.gov.

The only agency that didn't provide answers, including the number of voter complaints, was the Board of Elections, which is a nonmayoral agency.
