"The Soviet Union detonated its first thermonuclear bomb in 1955, only a year after the first American H-bomb was tested."
The first American test of a hydrogen bomb was the Ivy Mike test on October 31, 1952. The Soviets tested a "partial" hydrogen bomb on August 12, 1953 that had a yield of 400 KT of TNT, and then tested a true hydrogen bomb on November 22, 1955.
