Uranium vs. Thorium
The Thorium used in commercial reactors is also many, many, times more abundant than Uranium in nature.
Uranium vs. Thorium
I continue to be surprised at the lack of discussion of the Thorium reactor alternative. There are some new proposed designs (yes, it might take longer because we haven't done it before) of Thorium reactors that have significant advantages over Uranium reactors: first, the amount of radioactive waste is greatly reduced; second, they are passively safe; and most important, nowhere in the cycle is any material produced that can be used to build nuclear weapons. Thorioum reactors were not developed initially because we needed our energy reactors to produce some of the materials for our weapons programs.
We need to educate the American public (and politicians) about the choices that are available.
