The Church and Gay Marriage

Brits Donossian: Who?

The Church and Gay Marriage

Asher Henry: Opposing homosexual marriage on religious grounds has nothing to do with separation of church and state. It has to do with moral convictions, and those convictions are there whether you believe in a God or not. I have the right to oppose homosexual marriages as well as you have the right to not oppose them. That has nothing to do with separation of church and state. And, it is not only religious people who oppose such unions. Many non-religious people do too.

gay marriage

I place my energy on love, not on hate.

I believe my partner and I have given to our local community unselflessly. I am a hospital staff member, my partner is an educator, and both us are volunteers.

We do not choose to argue with those who focus on hate toward gay marriage.

We do choose to continue to be an example that a lesbian couple can love deeply and be as committed to each other and community as any heterosexual couple.

We work toward the right to be married, not as a statement as lesbian women, but as a statement toward equality to all who are unjustly discriminated against.

Gay Marriage: why do you care?

Here is what I don't understand-why do so many conservative groups allocate time and money to "fight" this issue? I can't think of a logically sound argument for how this will affect the everday lives of non-homosexual Americans. We are a country that is billed as the "land of opportunity" and as being accepting of all races and ethnicities, yet we are fighting our fellow Americans and, ultimately, trying to force them into a second-class, substandard living situation.

Also, along with the separation of church and state, if we take all of the sayings in the Bible as black-and-white and not account for the culture of the era in which they were written, then we would have to force women into a subservient environment and start stoning dissenters in the streets. It's time that we focus on the Ten Commandments (which, by the way, deplores adultery-where's that in our constitution?) and understand that the New Testament was written by humans and has been translated hundreds of thousands of times over(in fact, most of the original documents were destroyed!) and learn the overall lessons of humility and acceptance that are taught.

Keep religion out of this!

The right to marry is a civil right, conferring more than 1000 benefits at the state and federal level. Those who oppose marriage for same-sex couples do so on purely religious grounds. Have they forgotten about the separation of church and state? Legalizing same sex marriage does NOT require ANY religious institution to sanction the union. Getting a marriage license should be akin to getting a driver's license!

Keep your religious faith out of my life, please, and I'll keep my marriage out of your church.

Homosexuals and Marriage

Eric Williams of CA: God did not created homosexuals to be homosexual. To claim that to be so, God would have had to break his own laws, which he would not do. To engage in homosexual activity is a choice. Once the choice has been made, the persons involved have usually entered on a road of no return, and they are drawn into a malstroem of perversion. I have seen both souls and bodies being destroyed by out of control homosexual activity, and it is a picture that has thoroughly shaken me up.

God's word

For those who are intent on using the Bible to prove their points, they should also know that the Bible also tells us that one of the evils the apostle Paul prophesied about for our "latter times" was "forbidding to marry" (see 1 Timothy 4:1, 3). Therefore it is obvious from this scripture in the Bible that anyone opposing gay marriage is therefore contributing to this prophesied evil.

until all of us are free...

Gay marriage harms exactly no one. How does the "threat" of gay marriage harm my middle class family? I'll tell you. My brother has to live in another country because his foreign partner and he have not been able to marry. They are legally married in Spain, thank goodness, but my new, legal, brother-in-law cannot gain US citizenship because our laws are so antiquated. So: my parents are deprived of seeing their son, my daughter is deprived of seeing her uncles, and I am deprived of my dear brother. This is supposed to be a GOOD thing? Talk about family values!! How does it benefit my family that my brother and his husband can't live here, with their FAMILY? What about equal rights for all citizens? Until all of us are free, none of us are free.
