A New Debate Over Steering Hurricanes

Should taxpayers fund research into weather modification?

Very bad idea

Once again man's arrogance is at the forefront.

The technology may exist, but the KNOWLEDGE on how to use it properly absolutely does not.

I guarantee that there would be "unintended consequences" that would make us regret that action. Look at our history with building Dams, which is generally now thought to have a whole host of unintended negative consequences.

By the time we learn of the negative consequences of these massive planetary engineering EXPERIMENTS it will be too late.

To what effect?

It wouldn't be very nice to try to send the storms southward so as to hit Mexico and Carribean nations instead of us. But trying to weaken storms as they are forming way out in the Atlantic would be pretty cool, if it's really possible to weaken them.

Given the size of the bets that are made in the private insurance world, though, on whether, when and where hurricanes will hit, it's little wonder the government is afraid of lawsuits for "tinkering"

controlling hurricanes

The first attempt to seed a hurricane was in 1947 and the hurricane chnaged direction and hit Georgia. At first the government admitted it was responsible, but then the lawsits started so they came up this excuse: the hurricane changed direction, but the cloud seeding had nothing to do with it. See Project Cirrus ono google.

Project Stormfury had many successes such as changing the course of several hurricanes and slowing them down. See Project Stormfury on google, but the Reagan Administration cancelled the program and used the excuse that it was a failure. At the same time planes were seeding huricanes in the Atlantic, others were seeding clouds and storms over Vietnam with tremendous success causing rains a flooding over North Vietnam for seven years. As a result we were condemned in the UN and forced to sign a treaty promising not to use this technology in warfare. See Project Popeye on google.

The technology to control hurricanes does exist (see Controlling Hurricanes on google and see the article in Scientific Ameican in 2004), but the politicans are nervous of lawsuits and other political issues.

advance method projection

The crystalization of the inner wall will not only change or influnce direction but can stall an event horizon, The damage can come from rainfall over the area of projection. Therefore subs should be used in the eye of the storm over open ocean to prevent damage to civillian areas or oil platform producing areas. That's is if the intention is for non-military application in the use of economic destabization as a weapon of change.

i think this needs to be researched more and discussed, im very afraid of mucking about and making things worse, yet i grew up dreaming of star trek, and i think this could be potentially life saving, and a great step forward in many ways, but there has to be a whooooole lot more put into this, debate, study, it's too vital and potentially disastrous to move quickly on this.
