Arctic Drilling Wouldn't Cool High Oil Prices

Federal energy analysts say it would take 10 years for production to begin, and its impact could be very modest

Don't kill the fuzzy bunnies and Polar Bears.....

America should not kill the polar bears in Alaska just for Oil. Unless gas prices get too high. It's going to be pretty interesting to see who stays in the "save the enviornment" camp when gas is at $5.00/gallon.

It's more like, "Save the enviornment" unless it costs too much.

Ten Years??

I see them put up an oil well in a week or two and ready for production. Why ten years?

drilling

drilling

You should only drill if it does not harm anything. It does not matter how much money it costs the us has plenty of it.

drilling for another big lie

Remember in early 03 when Bush and the republicans claimed weapons of mass destruction' connections between Saddam Hussain and the 9/11 attack' US being in danger from Iraq. It seems like the american people are being fooled again by big oil' President Bush and the Republicans again. Drilling would only cause us to continue to recklessly consume large amount of energy which is bad for both our health and the environment and in the long run more expensive for the average american and won't change are behavior to conserve. Both the American people and our leaders need to do is phase out coal and oil and to convert to clean energy. There is a lot of potential out there for clean energy. Boone Pickens to his credit is willing to make that change. If big oil and coal companies are willing to change not only will they win but as americans we will all win with the change to clean energy.

Oil only for USA?

All oil, wherever it is drilled, is auctioned off by the Oil Companies to get the best price. Our oil produced will go onto the world market along with all other oil.

Will oil added to the world market cause prices to go down? Yes, a very little bit. Apex may temporarily lower prices to head off America’s threat of oil-drilling our threat of a concentrated search for (horrors) alternative energy sources.

But no, not for long because the Mid-Eastern oil wells are being depleted and they will need to slow production and raise prices of their best marketable commodity in order to survive.

This is good for the Oil Companies. Drilling is a win-win situation. The price is now at last high enough to make drilling profitable in the Anwar and off-shore--it will stay high, and by the time they have explored, found, drilled, and pumped that oil, the production in the big oil producing countries will be dwindling fast so that oil prices and profits will continue to sky-rocketed.

Plus, by the time our oil production is up in that 10-20 years, our population will have increased by another million, increasing even more our need for oil. They can’t lose!

Unless, of course, Americans are hurting so much at the pump and on our over-crowded cities and roads that we finally do what President Carter said we needed to do 30 years ago—conserve, insulate, lower automobile gas mileage, and actively search for alternative fuels.

But tagged as being negative, he lost the election because Reagan won us over by his cheerful optimist, saying we needn’t worry one little bit if the Republicans were in charge! Within a year Detroit was pumping out those big gas-guzzling luxury cars again and making money as if there were no tomorrow.

No country has ever looked for new alternatives to problems unless it was absolutely necessary to do so. New feels scary; old feels comfy. The status quo is just so much more comfortable.

There’s only one bad scenario for the Oil Companies. If the Oil prices REALLY went down—then it would be too expensive for them to do the explorations and pay for the infrastructures to get the oil out of new uncharted areas, and they’d have to stop until prices went back up again. Which of course, they will have to if you take into consideration the rising world population and the fantastic rise of China’s oil use.

Or worse, if we started using alternative power sources and didn't need so much oil any more.

Wiil not help

Are multinational oil companies obligated to sell that oil only to the USA at a reduced cost? I thought they wanted more record profits so they will sell it to the highest bidder as they do already. Japan, China and India get most of the oil. Drilling here wont reduce gas prices or the price of other goods. A better economic policy would help a lot more as will alternative resources of power.
