But sometimes these changes were not clearly communicated to the people in the field. The report found evidence that the military used interrogation techniques that may have been prohibited under military policies at the time. Among those is a method known as "short shackling," in which a detainee is chained to the ground and cannot stand up. Though short shackling had initially been considered a permissible "stress position," the Defense Department banned it in 2003.

Yet according to the inspector general's report, in 2004, FBI agents witnessed at least one detainee chained in a hunched position for three to four hours, urinating on himself. But even the FBI agents did not realize the chaining was no longer permitted. It wasn't until later that year that the technique was explicitly banned at Guantánamo.

What to do with the Detainees?

Everybody seems to be calling for the closure of Gitmo. Thats fine and well but what shall we do with the Detainees?

The War on Terror is a very complex issue when you factor in the present variables. World opinion, respect of religion, world governments, the Iraq/Afghan insurgency, Al-Qaeda, public opinion, war contractors, political processes, Gitmo, tribal affairs, Bush, Al-Maliki, Karzai, american Soldiers, DNC, RNC, UN, Palin, Pakistan, Iraq, Iran... etc... A simple statement like close Gitmo is an uneducated and knee-jerk reaction. Americans are not brutal people. The thought of physcal force goes against our morals. Terrorism and Terrorists force us into this position. This is the point of the Terrorism tactic.

The detainees at Gitmo are a select group of people whose sole purpose in life is to advance Islam through deadly terror. Check out dod.gov, they list the charges of detainees for public info. They want to kill us! Do we release them? Would we close a county jail, or state prison, or federal prison... how are they different? Contrary to popular opinion, they are not being held without charge. Plain and simple. dod.gov, check it out.

Close Gitmo, but what about the Detainees?

Guantanamo

You guys sayin they deserve it are sick. If ALL of them were terrorists then sure, torture them, they deserve it. But many of them are innocent citizens who were traveling or living near the border. Many of these POWs were non Jihadists who were kidnapped by US because they dont care if theyre terrorists or not. Imagine if for example mexico and US are at war and you live near San Diego and get kidnapped by mexican soldiers and were tortured and raped. It's sick. Unless for sure they know the people are Jihadists then dont torture them.
