McCain Sees a "Very Contentious" Presidential Election Campaign

But he says, if victorious, he would take a conciliatory approach to governing

How soon we forget

How soon we forget John McCain's involement in the savings and loan failures of the late eighties and early nineties. Along with four other senators, he intervened before federal regulators on behalf of his criminal friend Charles Keating whose fraudulent lending practices led to depositors, investors and pensioners losing billions of dollars. Like today, in the current financial crises, taxpayers paid the bill.

McCain received significant amounts of cash as well as vacation perks from Keating. Keating also provided a shopping center deal for his family.

Unfortunately, McCain and the others senators, who should have been expelled from the Senate and prosecuted, were given wrist slaps and were told they used bad judgement. The bad judgement, of course, was that they got caught. The Senate protects their own.

It seems that Americans have short memories and they are willing to forgive and forget. The problem is, nothing has changed. The crooks are still in power and the people are paying the freight as usual.

McCain's lack of straight talk

I recall a TV pundit wondering out-loud in 2000 why so many people were taken by Senator McCain and the excitement he brought to the Primary- his Straight Talk Express. I thought why is that hard to understand: people know the truth and a straight (no bull) shooter when they see it and hear it.

Now in 2008 McCain has sold his soul - he's a sour, nasty, a parody of a tough guy. In 2000 I would have voted for Senator McCain and if he were the same McCain it would be a hard choice THIS YEAR. As other's have written he's sold his soul to the Rove Campaign operatives. That should be the ONLY reason we don't elect him President - he's sold out.

It was a nobel campaign

Until McCain's swift boat team got started. I've worked for the Navy for over 20 years. McCain was one of my heros. Untill he exposed himself. "Straight Talk" my ass. his high school nick name was "McNasty", and he's runing the most dishonest, underhanded campaign we've seen in years. Just look at the facts, and I hope as well as loosing this election he's thown out of the Senate.

Body snatched

This new John McCain we're seeing would rather lose his honor than lose an election.

We've seen this playbook before

George W. Bush ran his 2000 campaign promising to "be a uniter, and not a divider."

Easy to make promises you don't intend to keep in order to be elected.

Dump MCSAME.

Jake of NY/ Bob of CA

First of all, I do not understand why US News would actually allow a comment so off topic and idiotic as the one that "Jake" posted. Who cares if Obama is sexy or if he's the ugliest man ever. "Babes" obviously cannot use their brain cells (if they have any) to make such an important decision as chosing the next POTUS.

Bob, I agree. As much as I like McCain he is not 100% qualified for this position. However, if you think Ron Paul, is the lesser of THREE evils I think you are sadly mistaken.

Dump McCain!!

John McCain is going to get steamrolled on November 4th by an empty suit (Obama), and there is really nothing that McCain can do to iron out the wrinkles in his own already “empty suit”.

I, being someone who will not "pick flies out of sh*t" in my choice for a presidential candidate, neither McCain nor Obama is qualified for our nations' most important job. McCain will have to choose a real dope for his running mate in order to prevent being overshadowed and having his lack of substance revealed.

The best thing that we can do is NOT nominate him at all and choose Ron Paul instead at the GOP convention in September!! Ron Paul is more than qualified, has a plan that will work and will lead our nation honorably. Ron Paul can raise the money, get people excited and has the best chance of beating Obama of all the other Republican candidates. The GOP would be foolish not to nominate Ron Paul! This will also explain why Ron Paul’s “ Rally for the Republic “ will most definitely overshadow John McCain’s presumptive nomination at the dull Republican National Convention down the street.

It's not too late to admit that McCain is a bad choice and to remedy the situation. If no one is excited about McCain now, they surely won't be two months from now. Get the geezer out now so we won't have a 1996 repeat of Bob Dole! McCain can't win if he doesn't have the support of the conservative base and nothing is going to change that, plain and simple! There will not be a last minute reprieve by disgruntled Republicans this time around to save him when most people are finally rejecting the worn-out lesser of two evils argument. If McCain remains as the nominee until November, he will destroy the Republican Party and run its members out to most likely join the Libertarian or Constitution Party, or simply drop out of the voting process all together. This wouldn't necessarily be a bad scenario as long as these people are not continuing to do the same thing that yields the same bad results. It’s time to “Dump McCain”!!

Contentious

Of course it wil be contentious. McCain claimed he would conduct an honorable campaign. He and his surrogates are liars. Hopefully the Democrats will fight back hard. They need to point out the lies, question McCain's integrity and express the reservation of his own Republican Seante colleagues about his temprement. Use Thad Concran and Pete Domenici's quotes every day. McCain was known as McNasty and it hasn't changed. He's a disaster.

A "pledge" from John McCain for conciliation on anything whatsoever is as useless and queer a thing as a three-dollar bill. The guy is lying in ads EVERY DAY about Obama. He is no longer "honorable" at all, if indeed he ever was. Defeat the old blusterer before he sets off the nukes.

jMcinsane

Would John McCain get in bed with the Terrorist... he got in bed with the communist.

John McCain is a TRAITOR who has always had a problem KEEPING his whoring pants zipped.

ask Republican Senator Thad Cochran of Mississippi about John McInsane sanity
