NARAL Poll Shows Abortion Issue Could Push Independents and Pro-Choice Republicans to Obama

The poll found if voters know the candidates' stances, they choose Obama over McCain

abortion

I am over 65. Both my grandmother and my aunt had abortions prior to 1930. In my aunt's case it was a do it yourself job which left her infertile. Only recently did I realize that all of her comments about "well, I'd never want to have children" while she was making dresses for me were a cover-up for her real affection and feelings.

But the pro-life people not want TO STOP THE BIRTH CONTROL Pill. There literature is clear on the desire to outlaw the morning after pill and the IUD but some of the efforts claim that the pill sometimes does not prevent fertilization but murders the child by prohibiting it from obtaining nourishment by attaching to the wome. By obtaining a definition of life beginning at conception, not implantation, they can then claim that the regular birth control could be abortion and murder.

Pro Life vs. Pro Choice

As a Catholic, I've struggled with the pro-life versus pro-choice dilemma every election and as a result, I didn't vote for over 30 years! I do not like the Republican idiologies, so what am I to do? In 2004, I decided to register as an Independent...not endorsing either party. I voted for Kerry since I embraced his idiologies more than Bush's. I think if every Christian or non-Christian who is pro-life would vote Republican, what would be the point of having a democracy? The same party would win time after time. I really don't believe the abortion issue should even be on the table of politics. For me, it is a moral issue more than anything. People can take abortion off the table completely but women will still have abortions if they choose to do so.

Who decides is the question

Obama obviously believes that it is the woman's decision regarding her own fertility. McCain obviously believes that the states have the ultimate say which means woman will have the right to choice in some states and politicians, mostly males, will have the say in other states. Hence compulsory motherhood will rule in Alabama or a Bible Belt state and women will have the right of choice in California. Does this sound like good public policy or fairness in term of a woman's right to privacy?

Abortions will go on whether legal or not and why not be safe and legal rather than illegal and unsafe. This is a no-brainer for thinking people.

Pro Life vs. Pro Choice

being pro life, is actually against the teachings of the bible in my opinion. Jesus spent many years trying to relieve suffering. He reached his hand out to outcasts of society, those dying of disease and left to fend for themselves. One of the main reasons i believe Jesus taught me to reach my hand out, like him, is to help others and their burdens. in the end, all this is... is the relief of suffering.

what would the world be like, had every country around the world made abortion illegal? the world population is around 6.7 billion right now. take back every abortion in the past 25 years around the world, the population right now would be 7.5 billion. we are already seeing wars over resources, which in the end leads to millions of lives suffering. imagine how much less resources to go around there'd be if you add 1 billion people to the mix today. the number of people dying of starvation, would drastically increase. safe drinking water would be more scarce. disease would increase. ban abortion and you eventually are directly causing the suffering of millions of people. would you rather force them to live in suffering? or end the life before it knew what suffering even was? forcing millions of human beings to live in suffering, is not only cold and torturous, but its as if you'd want to watch people suffer rather than end it humanely. I'm sure the devil loves suffering. I believe he feeds off of it.

for anyone that believes god, not a doctor should decide the human life... i hope if you ever get cancer you don't go see a doctor, and instead simply pray the cancer away. im pretty sure i already know gods answer to your prayers in most cases. he would choose death... the end of suffering.

Pro Life vs. Pro Choice

I disagree when it is stated that American's are much to smart to vote strictly on pro choice issues. As a Christian, I am bound by my beliefs to vote for the pro-life candidate, I could list dozens of bible verses that state the same. I am a former Marine, my son is a Marine who has completed two tours in Iraq as a Scout and was in harms way daily. We both served for the freedom of all American's, to include those still in their mothers womb! I understand that many disagree with my position, and that is between them and their belief system. What frustrates me is those that profess to be Christians and yet support a party that is overwhelmingly pro-choice. I don't understand thier thought process not their theology!

naral "poll"

I would believe that anyone that paid any attention to the Saddleback Church forum would completely understand the positions of Sen. McCain and Obama on abortion. This does look a scare tactic, and the questions were grossly slanted to one position, agreeing with the opinion of the pollsters. The whole Roe vs Wade decision is a case of judicial activism and poor case law. If the pro-abortion crowd is so sure the majority of Americans support abortion without limits, let them do it the right way according the constitution, with an amendment.

Abortion Rights

People say leave the decision to abortion to the mother, the doctor, her family, and God. I agree that the decision should be left up to God. However, God has already given his answer to how abortion should be handled. The answer is found in a book hardly anyone reads anymore. It is called the BIBLE. God states over and over throughout this book directly and through the inspired authors of the Bible,"Thou shalt not KILL". Abortion is murder and it is as simple as that.

Not Really a Maverick

Not only is McCain's record clearly anti-choice, he may as well be a clone of Bush when it comes to votes on the Iraq war, the environment, taxes, corporations (greed) over people, and much more. Despite his long years in the Senate, McCain even admits he has no particular knowledge about the economy (Issue No. 1 right now) and neither does he even have any foreign policy credentials. Experience - yes. Maturity - no. His penchant for losing his temper and opening his mouth before the brain is engaged is itself a disqualifier. Although I personally disagree with both candidates on the immigration issue and consider myself now an Independent, it will be easy to cast my vote for Obama - against McCain - in November. This country cannot survive another 4 years of the Bush fiascos on every front. Please, no more Mr. Inarticulate Incompetent.

States to decide

I'm strongly for abortion rights and massive contraception funding, but by the states. In fact Choice advocates should leave one state alone, probably MS, so anti choice activists can all move there and the rest of the country can be rid of them.

Then they can build clinics right on the state lines to serve the one state. It's a MAJOR tactical dispute. We need MUNICIPAL contraception to allow cities and towns to save money on public schools.

Not a poll at all

This was not a poll at all. Just looking at the descriptions of the candidates used by the 'pollsters' goes to show their intentions were not to collect opinions, but to give them.

It's propaganda in its worst form. Under the guise of conducting a poll, they caught the attention of concerned citizens and fed them a glamorized portrait of Obama. meanwhile, they contrasted with a hard facts-only description of McCain, peppered with pro-choice wording ("opposes a woman's right to choose.")

NARAL's methods are deplorable.
