3 Things You Didn't Know About Maryland Primaries
1. Because of the earlier primary date this year, for the first time in decades, Maryland's Democratic primary will be of significance and have some bearing on the nomination. In the newly christened "Potomac Primary" or "Chesapeake Primary," Maryland, Virginia, and D.C. will vote on the same day.
2. This year, the State Board of Elections reinstated the rule that 17-year-olds who will be 18 by November 4 are eligible to vote in the primary. This adds 15,200 voters, of whom 68 percent registered as Democrats.
3. While campaigning in a Maryland shopping center on May 15, 1972, Democratic candidate George Wallace was shot by would-be assassin Arthur Bremer. Wallace won the primary the next day but was paralyzed from the waist down and withdrew from the campaign. The Democratic nomination went to George McGovern, who lost to Richard Nixon in a landslide. Bremer was released from prison in November 2007.
