50 Ways to Improve Your Life

Watch TV Free Online

Many websites let you watch your favorite shows whenever you want without paying for cable

Posted December 18, 2008

You no longer need to be home at 9:30 p.m. on Thursday to catch up with the coworkers you love to hate on 30 Rock. Simply go to NBC.com and tune in at your convenience, and even pause it to get snacks. Most Americans still prefer traditional TV and pay $40 or more a month for television channels seldom watched and far more for premium channels. But the mysteriously Lost castaways can be viewed free online with a high-speed Internet connection. All the major networks—ABC, CBS, NBC, and Fox—post a large variety of their shows online, typically within 24 hours of being shown on TV. Viewers streamed 235 million videos in October on Hulu.com. About 11 percent of adults ages 18 to 34 already watch TV online at least once a week, research firm Knowledge Networks found. Comedy Central's The Daily Show and The Colbert Report even have extensive show archives online, the former back to 1999.
