Square Foot Garden
I have been using the SFG for over 2 years as a practical way to teach my young kids about gardening. The results are great, weed work is at a minimum, and watering takes about 5-10 minutes. The kids really enjoy picking out the veggies for the summer. I have two boxes on my deck in Maryland and I usually can get in one fall crop too. The key is the grid so you can figure out how many plants/seeds to drop in. It is a stuggle not to over plant because the soil mixture guarantess growith. We enjoy fresh salads all summer.
Square Foot Garden
I've been using the SFG method for well over 10 years and I love it. It's fenced in so that my dogs can't get the green beans! I have 3 squares. Every year I try something different. I may add another garden this year, only 4 more squares. My sister is going to start one this year. I highly recommend this method..
Square Foot Garden
I have been using the SFG method for almost 1 year now. It is the best thing I have ever done! Growing vegetables could not be easier. The book "Square Foot Gardening" is an absolute "must have" if attempting this method. I have documented my garden from the start throughout the seasons on "You Tube", Donna's Square Foot Garden. Check it out, it really does work!
Mel Bartholomew
I started watching Mel Bartholomew's Square Foot Gardening when I was stationed in Duluth, MN with the US Air Force. He is a Genius and yet, I don't understand why his method of gardening hasn't taken over the world and done away with planting in rows.
His method of Square Foot Gardening is so simple, affordable. It produces MORE, decreases the work required to grow plants, and saves money! Plus, it's all healthy, there'll be no "recalls" or "health alerts" if you grow your garden the Square Foot Gardening way by Mel Bartholomew!! TRY IT YOU'LL LIKE IT!" Also, the support you get from him and his staff at his website is wonderful! They are all sincere, and enthusiastic about Square Foot Gardening, and are absolutely willing and available to assist you in starting your own garden, and be successful at it.
I highly recommend Mel Bartholomew's REVOLUTIONARY Method of Gardening!
rewards of sfg
Square foot gardening has been a favorite of mine for the last ten years. It is ideal for container gardening in the apartment or condo setting. It is truly amazing how much produce can come out of such a small (4X4) foot garden. The satisfaction and pleasure one gets from "growing your own" is immeasurable. Mel gets an "attaboy" from here on the emerald (gulf) coast in Alabama for his innovative and valuable ideas. By all means everyone should buy the updated version of his book.
Totally organic
I have a square foot garden and love it. By using compost that is rich in nutrients there is no need for fertilizers. Any bugs that come by are easily removed so no pesticides ever get on my plants either. My garden is a 4x4 foot box on top of an old recycled picnic table. I never have to bend over to pick my carrots, lettuce, etc. THE KEY IS THE GRID!! without the grid, it isn't a square foot garden.
in my box over the year I plant:
16 lettuce, 32 radishes, 1 thyme,1 oregano, 2 basil, 4 cilantro, 32 carrots, 9 onion, 4 leeks, 9 daffodils, 1 pepper, 1 broccoli, 4 tomato, 4 bean or sugar snap peas, 4 marigolds, 9 tulips, 1 cauliflower, 1 lemonbalm, 1 cabbage, various flowers when things die off.
they all rotate depending on the season. only the herbs stay year-round. i am leaving some plants out, but you get the idea... high yield little space.
SFG Year-round
I recently was on a hiatus from work and while networking and starting my own business, set up 4 SFG boxes on my terraced, mountainous lot. We are now reaping the rewards of a few hours work - parsley, basil, may types of greens (mustard, collards, Swiss chard, several lettuces), beans, tomatoes, radishes, etc. And they compliment our lemon, lime and fig trees planted nearby. I'm spreading the word arount Honolulu because we import much of our food.
We're luckybecause you can almost continuously grow most crops so you always have fresh green as long as you plant in rotation.
Better than my green-thumb-sister's garden!
We're in our third year with our SFG boxes. We live in the Phoenix area, so something is growing in them 12 months of the year. My sister is has always been considered the green thumb of the family, but my box-grown tomatoes produce triple the yield of her traditionally-grown plants, and without the watering-related tomato problems like cracking and blossom-end rot. We eat vegetables every day in our large family, give away lots of produce, and bottle lots of it. The plants and flowers are so ornamental, also, that all our visitors rave at our gorgeous gardens. Square-foot gardening is the only way to go!
The ONLY way to garden!
This is the most incredible system. I have helped start 3 other locations other than my own. My family and I are committed to spending time playing together, so this garden eliminates all the chores and gives back way more produce for the amount of energy and resources it takes. This leaves us able to have great veggies without all the headache. I've even started an organic farm on the SFG method to eliminate weeds. So far so good. This will be my 5th growing season in my second square foot garden. Maximize your efforts!
