Student with perfect attendance wrote Winning Essay to attend the Inauguration

I am writing on behalf of my daughter,a 6th grade student at Hickory Middle School (Chesapeake, VA). Sha has perfect attendance (K- present). An essay detailing her love of history and specifically presidential biographies garnered her a bus trip to the inauguration. Her request includes the accompaniment of her favorite teacher. Presently, her Chesapeake school will not allow her to count this honor as a special school field trip. I am not sure telling her story would help, but hopefully if the right person reads the story (maybe a school board member) it may help. Regardless of the outcome, Milan will not miss this historical event. Bleacher seats or even the much coveted-inaugural tickets would enhance this experience for her, and help ease the pain of the perfect attendance that she is sacrificing.

"Obama People's Have a Crush on Me"

I have never voted in my life. Atage 61, I voted for the fist time. It took Obama to stir up my soul enough to care. FINALLY a change is gonna come!!! I was truly.."Born by a river.. in a little ole tent and just like that river..I've been rollin ever since..It's been a long time..but surly a change is gonna come!!" Praise The Lord!!

Born in the opressed South...I never thouht there was a way out, but truly .. never say die!

I'm as poor as you come..no job, no savings, no pention, no retirement, and worst...no health care. So to me...Obama is the light at the end of my tunnel.

On Nov 4, Election night there was no where I wanted to be than at Ebinizer Baptist Church for "Watch Night:An Election Prayer Rally" I stood out side waiting to get in the church for hours. I was at the front of the crowd right at the front doors. When they opened the doors the crowd crushed me against the front of the church. Paramedics came because I was in such pain. Mywhole chest hurt severely. They said I did not have any broken ribs, brused torn ligaments between my rib bones. I could have taken a seat down front in the church but was in such pain I had to go home and get in bed. I missed the whole night. I would love tickets to the inauguration to make up missing such an important night. So I have a crush on Obama and his people have a crush on me!!!"

What does the Inauguration means to me!!!

This Inauguration is one of the most important event in the history of my life. Being born and raised in Mississippi during the early sixties.Change has finally came. I am a Family Life teacher in a Juvenile detention center in one of the toughest cities in New Jersey, Camden.I am also a Family therapist for Juveniles who leaves incarceration and cannot return home. I have been in this field for over 11 years and continue to strive to enpower these young men and women that in spite of their circumstance life can be better.I always share my life story. Although I was born and raised in Mississippi. Mentally abusd by the South I did not turn to drugs and crime for an excuse. My father was a disable veteran. He was angry about the racism, poverty and the mental abuse that came along with living in the deep south.Of course the abuse trigger down to me and my five sibblings. Along with that we receive his abuse and the blated racism from the whites. Also came the segregation that I thought ended years ago. I was then bless in 1983. I married my husband, Michael Haddix, a running back For the Philadelphia Eagles, 1st round draft choice.I was able to leave Mississippi and be exposed to a different American where people were treated some what equal and fair. I attend Rutgers Univ.and enrolled in several black history classes to read about who I was. In the south I was not able to have a black history class because we were the black history. It took me 20 years to figure that out. I am now an educator. I'm the only African Americam teacher in the Facility. The detention center is 98% African American. I strive on a daily basis to stress change, hope, dreams can come true if we truly believe. I enter the detention center with a positive attitude. Knowing that if my dreams came true. Surving the oppression of the south, overcoming being undereducated because of the color of my skin, Not being loved because my father was being descriminated against by his father because society said black was whack, theirs is possible. Do I agree with the mind set of this new generation. NO but YES they express how we feel deep down inside. We were taught how to cope with our oppressed situations but stayed silent. The time has come where change must occur. This generation says no more. Their parents are a product of the last trickle down effects of blated racism. It still exist, but not so boldly. The words of the great Martin Luther King Jr.,"One day we will be judge by the content of our character not the color of our skin." This Inauguration still reminds me that this will be our first black president. The world remind me this will be our first black president. My white co-worker reminds me that this will be our first black president. The chills in my body reminds me that a person that looks like me, think me, and have face some of the same adversity that I have will now take the oath. CHANGE effects an entire people from generation to generation. 1/20/09 is CHANGE DAY.

The OBAMA (AMERICA) INAUGURATION

MY FOREFATHERS WERE SLAVES. THEY ENDURED THE TRIP FROM AFRICA TO THIS BRAVE NEW WORLD CALLED AMERICA. THIS INAUGURATION SOLIDIFIES TO ME, THAT THE TRIP THOUGH EXTREMELY DIFFICULT, WAS NOT IN VAIN. I'M A RETIRED SERGEANT MAJOR (27 YEARS ACTIVE DUTY ARMY). I'VE DEFENDED THE PRINCIPLES OF GOVERNMENT OF THE PEOPLE, BY THE PEOPLE AND FOR THE PEOPLE FOR MOST OF MY LIFE. I'VE ALWAYS BELIEVED IN THIS COUNTRY. WHEN I SAY THIS COUNTRY, I'M NOT TALKING ABOUT THE BEAUTIFUL MOUNTAINS, DESERTS, WOODED LANDS, RIVERS, AND STREAMS, I'M TALKING ABOUT THE GREAT DIVERSITY THE EXIST AMONG THE PEOPLE OF OUR COUNTRY. THIS INAUGURATION IS TRULY A MAJOR, AND I MEAN MAJOR STEP IN THIS COUNTRY BECOMING ALL THAT GOD INTENDED IT TO BE. I'M SO PROUD OF THE PEOPLE OF THIS COUNTRY AND THROUGHOUT THE WORLD THAT HAVE EXEMPLIFIED THE THEME OF A NEW BIRTH OF FREEDOM. NO MORE BUSINESS AS USUAL, BUT NEW ADVENTURES OVER EACH HORIZON.

Contest to Attend Inauguration of Obama and Biden

I hope that all of these wonderful people took the time to go to the Presidential Inauguration Committee (PIC) website

(https://donate.pic2009.org/tickettohistory)to enter their essays. It would be a shame to have these essays left as "comments" to the article (which I enjoyed reading) without ever actually being a part of the contest. Even though a donation is requested, it is not required. There is a place to click for entering without making a donation.

to me it means CHANGE ! Not just in the counry but in my attitude, actions, and goals. My personal goals are Empathic and Therapeutic Listening, growth in the community, communicate style and feelings, love like I've never been hurt, work hard like I don't need the money, and live a life of righteousness, so the preacher won't have to lie at my funeral ! Change also begins with rejections and responses, self-esteem, and self-concept. We as a nation must know and be able to cogitate the value of change. In the mean while, we must define our self-worth as a diverse community, culture, government, and nation. , if we critique ourselves, then we will improve ourselves. CHANGE is NOT in our pockets, CHANGE is NOT on the ground, however, CHANGE is in our minds ! This inaugaration gives the African American Ethnicty the chance to be proud !!!!

what the inauguration means to me

On January20,2009 Barack Obama will be inaugurated as President of the United States. No big deal right, that's just how America works. Well wrong big deal. This is the very first black President ever, and that's just one way to look at it, then when you think about it, when he gives the oath and promise, he gives it to the whole country. The country is in his hands.

The inauguration is changing of power. When Barack Obama walks into the White house, it is his home for four years. He is opening the door to more press confrences than ever, no privacy at all, when he blows his nose the wrong way he will be criticized for it. He also opens the door to being able to help make major laws and descisions. He not only make descisions for himself and his family, but the country. That is an abundant supply of responsibility. It is an honor when America puts it's country. He is apperantly good enough for the home of the brave and the free.

The the road will be tough and he will find happiness in the little things. It will change him as a person He will become more grateful and appreciative for the things he has. It will be a treat to sleep on his own bed.So the next time someone says the inauguration's no big deal,i( If you ever do find someone) tell them how important it really is, But what am I saying that America doesn't already know?

what this inauguration means to me

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character." That day is here, and will come full circle January 20, 2009 when, regardless of your political affiliation, history will be witnessed, as Barack Obama will be sworn in as the 44th President of the United States of America. Not only did the country elect one of the youngest Presidents in history, but Mr. Obama is the first African American elected to the most prestigious job in the world. This historical event goes to show that no matter how much you endeavor in life, you can accomplish your dreams.

The preamble of the Declaration of Independence states "that all men are created equal." With the inauguration of Barack Obama just days away, that famous quotation is living up to its powerful meaning. Over 200 years ago, Thomas Jefferson believed that every person, no matter his/her ethnicity, had the same rights as himself. Even 50 years ago, most citizens couldn't dream of a black man becoming President because America hadn't yet grown up. Over the last 50 years or so America has matured like a new born baby. At first, we crawled, watching Rosa Parks refuse to give up her seat on that Montgomery City bus. Then, we walked, as the "Little Rock Nine" became the firsts to enter an all white school. Soon, we ran, as Thurgood Marshall became the first to be elevated to the U.S. Supreme Court. Now, were jumping by leaps and bounds, as Barack Obama is about to become the first commander in chief of the greatest country in the world.

This inauguration is an inspiration to every American that you can pursue your dreams. As our next President himself stated, "Four years ago, I stood before you and told you my story, of the brief union between a young man from Kenya and a young woman from Kansas who weren't well-off or well-known, but shared a belief that in America their son could achieve whatever he put his mind to. It is that promise that's always set this country apart, that through hard work and sacrifice each of us can pursue our individual dreams, but still come together as one American family, to ensure that the next generation can pursue their dreams, as well." With Barack Obama accomplishing the inconceivable, it proves the point that you can do whatever you set your mind to, whether or not it has been done before. Growing up in a family that had never made it to college, and never had a consistent job, I look at Barack Obama as an inspiration of what I can do in life. "I have a dream today," said Dr. King., and along with a dream, you need an inspiration, and Mr. Barack Obama is my inspiration.
