1946—The world's first underwater atomic test explosion is carried out by the United States near Bikini Atoll, part of the Marshall Islands in the central Pacific.
1969—Sen. Edward Kennedy pleads guilty to leaving the scene of an accident. The car crash off the coast of Massachusetts's Chappaquiddick Island had resulted in the death of Mary Jo Kopechne.
1975—A Chorus Line opens on Broadway in New York at the Shubert Theatre.
1978—The world's first test-tube baby (conceived by in-vitro fertilization) is born via cesarean section in England.
1994—Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and Jordan's King Hussein meet at the White House at the invitation of President Clinton. Rabin and Hussein sign the Washington Declaration, ending the state of war between their countries.
