1952—A nationalist military coup is staged against the leaders of Egypt, including King Farouk.

1967—Riots break out in Detroit after police officers raid an after-hours drinking club in a predominantly black neighborhood. At the conclusion of the unrest, 43 people are dead, more than 1,100 are injured, and 7,000 are arrested.

1982—The International Whaling Commission votes for a worldwide moratorium on commercial whale hunting, starting in 1986.

1986—Britain's Prince Andrew marries Sarah Ferguson ("Fergie") in Westminster Abbey. The couple separates years later, finally divorcing in 1996.

2003—Massachusetts Attorney General Tom Reilly releases a report detailing sexual abuse by members of the Boston Archdiocese. The report finds that between 1940 and 2000, possibly more than 1,000 people were abused.
