64—A fire starts in Rome and burns for over a week, damaging large areas of the city.

1817—Jane Austen dies at the age of 41 in England. Earlier in the year, she began writing the novel Sanditon but was unable to finish it because of her health.

1925—Volume I of Mein Kampf is published. Adolf Hitler wrote it while in a Bavarian prison the previous year. The second volume was published in 1927.

1929—Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas author, Hunter S. Thompson, is born in Louisville.

1960—Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe's final movie, The Misfits, begins filming.
