Today in History, July 17: Battle of Castillon, Joe DiMaggio, and Disneyland

Posted July 17, 2008

1453—The final battle of the Hundred Years' War, the Battle of Castillon, is fought between English and French troops.

1918—The RMS Carpathia is hit by torpedoes from a German U-boat and sinks off the coast of Ireland shortly after midnight the next day. Six years earlier, the Carpathia rescued survivors from the Titanic.

1941—New York Yankees star Joe DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak comes to an end when he goes hitless against the Cleveland Indians. DiMaggio told a teammate that if he had a hit in that game, the 57th, Heinz was going to pay him $10,000.

1945—The Potsdam Conference begins in Germany with President Harry Truman, British prime minister Winston Churchill, and Soviet leader Joseph Stalin attending. It is the final meeting of the "Big Three" during World War II.

1955—After almost a year of construction, Disneyland opens in Anaheim, Calif. The Mouseketeers make their first appearance at the opening.
