1606—Printmaker and painter Rembrandt van Rijn is born in Leiden, Holland.
1862—A Confederate ship, the CSS Arkansas, battles a fleet of Union ships led by Adm. David Farragut. The Arkansas damages three of the Union's ships but is also damaged itself.
1912—At the Stockholm Olympic Games, American Jim Thorpe wins a gold medal for the decathlon.
1964—The Republican Party selects Arizona Sen. Barry Goldwater to run for president. Goldwater receives only 39 percent of the vote in November, losing to incumbent Lyndon B. Johnson.
1997—Fashion designer Gianni Versace is murdered in front of his home in Miami by Andrew Cunanan. Cunanan takes his own life eight days later.
