Today in History, July 7: Hawaii, Satchel Paige, and Sandra Day O'Connor

1777—British troops advancing south from Canada meet local forces at the Battle of Hubbardton in Vermont. It is the only Revolutionary War battle to take place solely in Vermont.

1898—President William McKinley signs the Newlands Resolution, formally annexing Hawaii as a United States territory.

1906—Pitching legend Leroy "Satchel" Paige is born in Mobile, Ala. In 1971, he would become the first player from the Negro Leagues inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

1981—Ronald Reagan nominates Sandra Day O'Connor to the United States Supreme Court. She would become the first female associate justice.

2005—Suicide bombers carry out attacks on London commuters, bombing three Underground trains and one bus. Fifty-two people are killed, and hundreds are injured.
