Ignorance is bliss (ignoring is too, I guess)

There are a lot of enlightened commentators here. The main theme I am sensing is, "ignore the fear monger and we'll all die and it won't matter anyway". Very zen. The intelligence of the remarks and the evidence presented by these individuals is similarly outstanding. Lots of forest in Nova Scotia, Greenland was green in the 1600's, the sun will red-giant in 2 billion years. Wow, there definitely isn't a problem with the world ecology as long as there are forests in Nova Scotia and since all life as we know it will be gone in 2 billion years.

Thanks for your opinions but I'll stick with living a conservative lifestyle with as little ecological impact as possible. I tend to believe the evidence presented by millions of educated scientist all over the world that have collected millions of pieces of evidence and the not the BS doled out by money grubbing corporations maintaining the status quo and enlightened individuals pointing out irrelevant observations.

Ecopoliticians part of the problem

Ecopoliticians are part of the problem. They mandate biofuels that ultimately increase global warming gas effect by increasing N2O emissions (298X worse than CO2), yet focus mostly on CO2 as the problem. Their land use polices ultimately increase methane production over CO2 release yet methane is 25X worse than CO2 as a GWG. They promote alternative energy solutions that take more energy to make and are less efficient than traditional energy sources. They force America not to tap our own oil, and force us to import it from our adversaries, and it increases total transportation pollution. They decry CO2, which is a life-essential gas, and ignore the health threatening ozone created by using ethanol, as well as the repair and replacement necessary from ethanol caused corrosion. They've force US mining of rare earth metals to cease, making us hostage to China for thie high-technology component. They force American producers to shut down domestic production and move it overseas, where pollution controls are less stringent. And they totally ignore the tens of billions of pounds of aerosol pollutants emitted by Asian producers.

Let's get real. Shift production back to America and overeall global pollution will be reduced. Quit preaching eugenics and population control, and focus on adapatation to a changing environment. The Earth changes, so must we. Want to have more food for a growing population? Allow CO2 to increase since plants grow faster in a CO2 enriched environment and in 540 million years of geological recordes, there has been no nexus between CO2 and temperatures. Reduce infrastructure construction and costs, and improve education, by promoting online public education. Implement real tort reform and make industry and government more efficient.

I have to wonder when i hear and see all the doomsday profits talking about global warming has it not occurred to them that during the 1600's the climate was much warmer Greenland was called that because it was Green with grass and trees the cause of the demise of the vikings was the cooling of the climate there that ended or greatly restricted agriculture and has anyone else seen the reports from astrologist that tend to point out that the base temperature of other planets in our solar system are rising could we somehow be the cause of this by sending rockets into space or is the answer a far simpler one the sun is going through a hot phase in its evolution towards a red giant that in a billion years or two will make all this discussion mute point

I'm glad I see the responses about his "qualifications". I was about to respond the same - search on his name and you might find his picture next to the definition of "alarmist opportunist". He was absolutely wrong about over population 40 years ago (which is not mentioned here), so why would we buy his book now? Oh, yeah! Because it's about another nature "crisis", or a continuation of an old one.

A few years ago, I spent an educational vacation in the historic triangle in Virginia, Williamsburg/Jamestown/Yorktown. It struck me at the time as we guided through an area where battles were fought, and the paintings of the events showed rolling fields. The guide also commented on how you can't really see the hill or valley where some events happened due to all the trees that grow there now. "What?! You mean all this was once tobacco farms and such?"

In my area of Arizona, I'm always struck by the lack of the sights and sounds of birds while riding or hiking in the desert. They're there, but very far and few between - probably the way it naturally is in the desert (see, there are fewer large indigenous trees in the desert…) Doves, quail, cactus wren... But a few miles away in my own neighborhood, All you can hear are birds - singing in the large trees everyone has planted in their yards. Sure, the concrete probably outweighs the amount of green in the neighborhoods, but why is it when you read a story on what's gone, don't you ever read about what's been added or replaced? There's an equation here, somewhere…..

Every fly in a plane across the US and look down? Do you see one vast metropolis from coast to coast or….what? I see mostly green and brown. Did you know that if you gathered every person in the world together, and gave each one a 2 foot by 2 foot area to stand on, they'd cover an area about the size of Jacksonville, FL? (Probably a little different now, this was based on 1997 book my Marilyn Vos Savant.). Sure, we utilize more land than what we live in, with roads, malls, industry, agriculture, etc., but are we really near the limit of land use for the whole world? If so, I guess this speaks even more for the need to spread out to other planets. I vote Paul and his wife get the first one to keep straight.

Erlich is not an expert....

in population or the environment. He is an expert at self-promotion and bombast.

He has been wrong for 40 years and he will be wrong 40 years from now. There are only two reasons that USNWR would give him space in the magazine: (1) it is a slow news week; or, (2) the editors there think Erlich knows what he is talking about.

I can understand the first reason but the second gives me pause concerning how seriously I can take USNWR from now on.

I've been a subscriber for 25 years and now I am beginning to have more doubts about the reporters and editors. Is there no skepticism in the newsroom? Have any of the staff read Erlich's twaddle? Do any of them know of the famous bet he made with Julian Simon in 1980? A bet Erlich lost and then tried to not pay?

Paul Erlich is a non-prophet when it comes to predicting the future but a true profit maker in the marker place.
