Today in History, June 26: Atlantic City Boardwalk, Elizabeth Taylor, and Strom Thurmond

1870—The Atlantic City Boardwalk opens in New Jersey. The popular tourist attraction was originally 8 feet wide and 1 mile long.

1945—Representatives from 50 nations sign the United Nations Charter in San Francisco.

1974—Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton's marriage ends in divorce. The couple remarried in October 1975 only to divorce again nine months later.

1977—Elvis Presley gives his final performance in Indianapolis, ending the concert with "Can't Help Falling in Love."

2003—At the age of 100, Strom Thurmond dies in Edgefield, S.C. He had retired from the United States Senate in 2002, having served 46 years.
