Blog Buzz: Tuesday's Speeches and Hillary's Future

Posted June 4, 2008

Our daily look at stories and topics lighting up the Internets:

Tuesday Speeches

TPM's Josh Marshall: McCain's was "frighteningly" bad. There are plenty of poor reviews of the McCain speech to be found today, even among people who liked the message. (By the way, what was up with that green backdrop? Is the McCain campaign hoping bloggers insert their own backdrops on the green screen?) Clinton's speech comes in for a lashing in several corners as well. (Though former Clinton ghost David Kusnet, also writing at The Plank, defends Mrs. Clinton's speech, saying that it wasn't unusual so much as the overall situation.) DemFromCT at Daily Kos rounds up the reviews of the Barack Obama and McCain speeches, and it's Obama in a landslide. Though there were plenty of critics on substance, and NRO's Rick Brookhiser runs down the list of eloquent American pols who never spoke from the bully pulpit. TNR's Jonathan Cohn, at The Plank, says Clinton was classless, McCain flat, and Obama inspiring — but warns that it's the last time for a while such an Obama-McCain contrast will be so easily teed up.

Hillary's Future

Daily Kos's georgia10 touts a possible Team of Rivals approach by Obama. NRO's Lisa Schiffren says Hillary has every incentive to keep going full speed, and delights at her female Dem friends ready to pull the lever for McCain. Meanwhile, tas at Comments From Left Field wonders why Obama has to deal with Hillary's supporters at all? Marc Ambinder lists questions to ask about a Unity Ticket. MissLaura at Daily Kos doubts Hillary wants the No. 2 spot. Ari Berman on The Nation's Campaign '08 notes that talk of an Obama-Clinton "unity" ticket is only coming from Clinton quarters. Meanwhile, Democracy Arsenal's Max Bergmann wonders why no one has mentioned HRC as a possible Secretary of Defense.
