So how can this work?
I don't see how a continuous export of manufacturing jobs overseas can work. Are not most of these developing economies export driven? I mean sure, you can have a 12 year old Chinese girl make your computer parts but at 50 cents an hour she's not exactly going to be rushing out to buy an iPhone. If America and Western Europe stop buying these goods in favor of gas and food, this recession goes global. Our consumers are the golden geese who will no longer be handing over their eggs at retail outlets as they have been slaughtered to make room for less well fed ducks.
And does anyone actually believe the numbers they come out with on the economy? GDP is not adjusted for inflation so defining a recession in terms of GDP makes no sense when inflation is high (0.6% increase in GDP-2.2% inflation=-1.6%). Of course, they factor out food and energy in determining the inflation rate then stop counting people out of work for longer than a specified period as being unemployed so those figures look rosy too.
Maybe we can't make it back to the 1960s but this administration has done a good job of getting us to Orwell's 1984.
too little too late
Travel abroad to see how drastically we have lost our edge. In fact, services is where the developing nations are making rapid advances. Manufacturing is taken for granted.
The ball has rolled downhill for 4 decades. It is hard to visualize how it can be returned to the same levels as the late 60s.
