Women who test positive for the breast cancer gene might want to check out Queller's favorite resources:

  • The nonprofit organization FORCE—for Facing Our Risk of Cancer Empowered— directs women with the BRCA mutation to related national conferences, support groups, chat rooms, and message boards.

  • Bebrightpink.com, a site for very young women at high risk of breast and ovarian cancer, was founded by a woman who had a bilateral prophylactic mastectomy in her early 20s. It provides health information, university and community outreach, and social networking.
  • Kathy Steligo, author of The Breast Reconstruction Guidebook, had breast cancer three times and reconstruction twice. Her book offers detailed explanations of reconstruction techniques and procedures, based on interviews with more than 500 women and medical experts.
