RE: Highland Park

Actually, in Highland Park, you can buy homes for less than $1.0 million (they will be duplexes) or rent (not too costly). The number one peformers at Highland Park tend to be the Asians, Indians, and Eastern Europeans -- all of whom (culturally) value great education -- and who also tend not to be wealthy, in Texas terms. Also, by far most of the graduates of HP go to OU, Texas, TCU, Arkansas, Kansas, Alabama, Georgia; the school is not some feeder for the Ivy League, by any means, unlike its East Coast counterparts.

Charter/magnet schools

In the state of North Carolina and specifically Wake County...a magnet or Charter school is only attended if your child WINS the lottery and gets accepted it is not based on your ability or interest in a strong academic program(provided by these schools). I would be better off playing the lottery each week for my three gifted students(tested by the school system)at least then I could afford to pay for the education that they should be getting every day. It is not fair that my tax dollars fund a few students many of whom are children of teachers in the system at the cost of the majority of students education (including my own children) I believe that if you can have a program like that offered at these magnet/charter schools, then they should be accessable at ALL schools. I give the school 3 gifted and hard working students each day...they are NOT getting the public school education they deserve. In North Carolina, the school board is thinking of teaching history from the LATE 1800's on and forgetting the rest of history! That should tell you alot about North Carolina I guess you get what you pay for! In NC everyone who does finally graduate from the public system MIGHT be able to make change whn they get a job at McDonalds (note:we have one of the highest drop-out rates in the country and it is not only the poor performers who drop out) I have one child who is at 3 levels above her grade for mathematics and she can not get into a magnet which would support and foster her talent. She is also FAR advanced in language arts and she is a dancer...she can not get into ANY of these programs and she is NOT the acception I can name at least 100 other children whe are being LEFT BEHIND and have as good or better academic records!

Open Enrollment

I have to chuckle when I see Highland Park Dallas as Open enrollment.Sure it is open enrollment as long as you can afford the 3 million dollar started home to live in the District.
