Student Loan Forgiveness: What You Need to Know

Why your spouse's income could trip you up

The word was "loan," people!

If you've become permanently disabled since getting the loans, then this isn't directed at you. Otherwise...

What part of the word "loan" did you people not understand?! It wasn't a grant. It was a loan. You *borrowed* money. You agreed to pay it back--with interest!

My student loans are pretty hefty, but you know what? I'm paying them back ahead of schedule on a public school teacher's salary. It makes me so mad that people just get these loans and then spend twenty-plus years whining and searching for loopholes to keep from having to pay back what they *agreed* to pay back.

Grow up, get a job (more than one if you have to), and PAY OFF YOUR DEBT, people!

student loan

i need help with my student loan. I tried talking to AES no help.

my student loan

my student loan is 24 years old and everytime i have gotten a letter about repayment i have been able to prove financial hardship. i did everything that was asked of me and when they said they were going to garnish my wages i send in the apporiate records and they still garnished my wages! i got them to stop and i only borrowed $2500.00 24 YEARS AGO!!!!! and i am being treated like a criminal and as if i owe millions of dollars i don't have a problem paying back what i borrowed but they want $9000.00. please be real!!!!!

10 Year Student Loan Forgiveness

I am a little confused by some of the comments made in regards to this article. It would appear that several people did not actually read the article. Also take the time and do some research on the 10 year student loan forgiveness program. If you are in public service or work for a non-profit you may qualify. This is a great program for students like myself who have borrowed over $90,000 in student loans and want to work in government. Check out http://www.ibrinfo.org for details on the 10 year student loan forgiveness program and more.

To address some other off topic statements I personally I think student loans should not be effectively immune to bankruptcy since that results in indentured servitude with the U.S. government and education lenders for education (student loans can be discharged in bankruptcy but the requirements are very difficult). That would address issues raised by others commenting about disability and more, but was not necessarily the topic of the article.

Need Solutions

The student loan repayment options don't seem to help most people/families in these difficult economic times. I have

contacted my senators asking for help.

If anyone has solutions for these comments, please post.

What can you do if you are unemployed or disabled and can't make payments and the interest is compounded?

Right now, I would not advise any student to take loans.

Go longer. Take Work-Study. Apply for all of the grants

and scholarships possible.

STUDENT LOAN FORGIVEN

I applied for a guarantee student loan back during the early eighties and was granted $10,000, I became totally disabled during 1994 which I'm unabled to pay back..I need a original copy to find out if anything in fine print mention forgiving or other ways that'll help me dispose of this loan.

What if Spouse is a teacher?

If my wife is a reading teacher at a title I school, and I am disabled, do we qualify for loan forgiveness?

What kind of public service jobs qualify for loan forgiveness?

I am currently working on my Bachelors in Psychology and I have had to get Student loans because I make "too much money" for grants.I am married with 2 little children and I work full time as a State Correctional Officer to be able to provide for my children. I know that the State of Florida has a loan-forgiveness program for education(but there is no jobs available in education). How do I find out if I am eligible for loan forgiveness in public service?
