Re: Programs in Maryland???

I would like to know if there are programs to assist Maryland residents to return back to work and receive tuition assistance for college? In Hagerstown, MD many residents have been laid off. The colleges here do not offer such a program.

Resources in California

Does anyone have a list of resources of schools in California that offer classes to California residents. Conversely, are the resources listed here available to out of state residents via e-learning. My girlfriend needs a few classes to be become employable as a graphic designer, however these classes are often very expensive.

New Scholarships for Laid Off workers

Kim Clark's article on this topic (2/2/09) and the chart that accompanies it regarding places where laid off workers can get free training continue to be a useful resource for readers. Please add Northampton Community College to the list. We began offering laid-off workers a full semester's worth of classes last January. We are continuing the program this fall and may extend it beyond that. You can find more information here:

Displaced, Damaged and Unemployed

June 2008, my husband had a heart attack. He was an OTR driver. July 6, 2008 he was terminated just shy of one year of service so no FMLA. Due to his condition, he was not eligible for unemployment due to not being able to work til cardiac rehab was complete. September 27 another heart attack. We were trying to keep afloat with one income and did well until 12/31/08 when my job was sent to Puerto Rico, and all of the office in Texas closed. Now we have both been looking for a job, going to school. He has completed school and testing and is now a LMT without a job, and I am in school to be a teacher, entering my junior year in the spring, begging for scholarship money since I made over the amount by 1300.00 last year for financial aid. Is there an end to all of this? We have used all of our savings and wonder whether or not we will be able to keep our house. Any advise?

Retraining and ultimately employment

I'm writing from a sense of desperation. I have been a Kentucky resident for four years now and live in Logan County. I am a college grad and have been a Research Biochemist, Research Center Manager and possess a strong science and medical background.

I had been computer network engineer a full time caregiver for eleven years to my Dad after her became a complete C-5 Quadruplegic and until his death 11 years after the incident. I was his case manager and responsible for his mental and physical wellbeing.

I have much to offer any employer and although I am due to apply for social security beginning in September, I would much rather be offered an avenue to retrain for a new career. I'm a life long learner; possess a high degree of intelligence and motivation and given the opportunity, will be as always a hard working consciencious employee.

I would be willing to meet with anyone, take any test perform any duties for which I possess the physical ability. My mental acuity is very strong.

I would appreciate direction, a course to pursue and I possess the burning desire never to fail!

Thank you so very much for taking the time to read my request for assistance.

God Bless,

Jennifer Dugert
