harvard

james watson stole the discovery actually. bad example

Harvard

Yes i agree no matter which school you go to .The most determinant is you and your mind. The sasd thing is people want judge you by which school you go to with out checking general performance.

Harvard

James Watson attended Indiana University and he co-discovered DNA molecule. It's nice to go to top ranked schools, but other schools will prepare you, too.

Harvard!

yea i agree. this is a nice school but its nothing special

Harvard

Harvard is undoubtly one of the best colleges in the nation, if not the best. I live in Virginia and I have not heard anything negative about colleges in my state with one exception VCU (since its location) . I had opportunities meeting with many students who went to different schools in VA, the majority of them are doing very well and very well-prepared for the real world. Schools are just the names. I am the one who believe in attitude. No matter what school you went to, if you have a great attitude, you'll have equal chances to achieve success.

Kids, Harvard is nothing special. Don't believe the hype or these popularity lists. Yes, the name would look great on a resume, but if you're looking for a great education in an environment where 99% of the student body isn’t arrogant and already "accomplished," there are plenty of other and cheaper options to look into. You want to attend an academic powerhouse (with a family-like atmosphere) that can bring you aboard as you are (a blank sheet of paper) and mold you into a somebody (success story), then go to schools like Cal-Berkeley, Virginia, NYU, Michigan, or Texas. They can do just as good a job as Harvard in "preparing you for the real world," if not better.

Response to Joel and Ann M

Joel, while you are right in noting that yield rate is improper to use as a metric in isolation (just as pretty much any is), it can be incredibly informative when used to distinguish schools in the same tier. Harvard consistently smokes Princeton and Yale when it comes to yield rates, which suggests that, aside from all factors US News quantifies, top students simply prefer Harvard, which, I would argue, says a lot about the school. Compare that to the measure that typically puts Princeton at or close to the top each year - alumni giving rate. Honestly.

In response to Ann's comments, I somehow doubt that the Ivy League education of many corrupt individuals "made" them into wrongdoers. I think the real argument is that since immorality is independent of education, you should expect to see bad people of all intellectual levels. The Ivy League villains are perhaps more prominent inasmuch as they are in positions that allow them to do greater harm (or good), and so they stand out more. There are plenty of unethical people in the world - from presidents down to plumbers. Perhaps, were the "blue-collar" types you spoke of exposed to the kind of authority many bankers enjoy, we'd be able to say the same of them.
