I believe children should not be paid because of good grades and good behavior because children should always try their best and act in a formal manner as a given. That isn't too much to ask of students of The United States. It isn't fair either,some states don't pay children like in Texas for instance. Trust me I would know,I live there. If kids discover that they are only being paid to stay in school and pass tests, they might not succeed in a situation because they don't have a teacher behind them breathing down their necks and paying money every time they do something good. In class I am having a debate about this topic and wish that all hear my thoughts and opinions.

i believe this is a good update because if we get good grades, [it would be added to taxes, 150$ a month maybe] we could give our parents the money we earned, we'd make some money, or parents wouldn't be affected, and people who don't have children would be supporting children

I am a volunteer business partner with an elementary school in Harlem, New York.
The economic challenges faced by the parents of the 3rd, 4th and 5th graders attending my school are great. Similarly, the shortage of resources they have available, from finances to having time to spend with their children's studies, are apparent. In correlation, the concerns many of the kids have are very adult in nature, such as will I be able to afford to go to college to how their family is going to pay this month's gas bill.
It's important to note, that the majority of my kid;s parents are no less committed to their children'' success than parents of children in private school. Everyone needs positive reinforcement.
The children I'm working with are the most loving, intelligent and gracious people I've ever met. They are very in-tune to their parent's finances, and the majority of them would leap for an opportunity to help their parents.
In my opinion, any child who desires to actively take part in their family's financial well being and is willing to get better grades to do it, is an extraordinary human being.
Thank you Mr. Fryer for creating such an exemplary program.
school is their job
i am a 20 year old college student! i was given rewards fr good grades such as money and things from my parenst as was my brother, which encouraged us to get good grades but something i learned myself was that i had to do it for myself not for the money when your children are done school or hit an age were you shouldnt have to pay them for grades they haven't learned that without an education your going no where and fast... dont bribe our youth with money they need the value and appreciation that they are being given a gift i was accepted to all of my top chioce school, still attending my community school to transfer has shown me more of an appreication for eductaion. i plan on becoming a special eductaion teacher soon and teaching my students the rewards of being educated.
the controversy
I believe rewarding a stuents hard work is a great idea. I just graduated in May and i was one of those students who gave up towards the end. I was off track a little bit to meeting the graduation requirements and that made me want to give up. In the end i busted my rear end to get on track, and I know if there was this kind of incentive program at my school, i would've done a whole lot better and tried harder. The people who are against this, claiming that students should not be paid to do what they are already suppose to be doing in school is just like telling a company that they should not have any incentives for their employees for doing the jobs they should already be doing. Let's face it, many of us wouldn't be doing our jobs as well as our bosses would like if they didn't have any kind of incentive program.

I tell my grandson(7th grade),"school is your job and you need to be the best at your job." He just unable to understand the long term rereward of math, history, language arts and science.
I have thought about paying him for going to school and after reading the article concerning the rewarding of students in Washington, DC and Chicago I think I will start a pay for grades with my grandson.
Just maybe paying thes students for their job of school keep them out of gangs and from dropping out of school because they need to help with the electric bill.
I say pay and pay good for a earned job will done.
