Two Campuses Cope With Tragedy

Posted March 13, 2008

Thousands of people attended memorial services this month for University of North Carolina student body President Eve Carson, 22, who was found lying in the street dead of gunshot wounds. Her death echoed the murder of Auburn University student Lauren Burk, who was killed one day earlier near that school's campus.

Despite such high-profile incidents, experts say that, overall, crime on (and near) campuses has declined in recent years, citing the 1990 federal law to report crime data as the catalyst for security improvements.
