Here's our take on which cars offer the best—and worst—mix of performance and fuel economy

To determine which cars offer the most "muscle per gallon," we started with all the vehicles in the U.S. News Best Cars database, multiplied the horsepower rating by the city miles-per-gallon number, and divided by 100 to create an easy-to-follow index number. Then we ranked the cars by that number. Our results reveal the cars that offer the best—and worst—mix of performance and fuel economy.
