Consumer Prices Move Up
Is inflation rearing its ugly head? The Labor Department today reported that core inflation rose 0.2 percent last month. And that measure excludes food and energy costs. That makes a big difference, as food costs have climbed up 4.4 percent over the past year and energy is up by a staggering 17 percent over the same period. The consumer price index rose by 0.3 percent last month, after staying flat in February.
Another economic indicator on the rise is industrial output. It went up 0.3 percent in March, following a 0.7 percent decline in February, reports the Commerce Department. Energy again was a key. Utilities were one of the biggest components of the increase, as their output rose 1.9 percent.
