In Praise of the Mighty M.B.A.
If you're interested in working in information technology, what is a good starting career move? A study from the University of Maryland's Robert H. Smith School of Business says that an M.B.A. goes a long way in IT—even more than experience. The study, Human Capital and Institutional Effects in the Compensation of Information Technology Professionals in the United States, found that IT professionals with M.B.A.'s on average earn over $24,000 more a year than those with only bachelor's degrees, and $17,000 more than those with other kinds of master's degrees. Lead author Sunil Mithas says "education is more valuable than experience, because it provides more durable and versatile conceptual skills." What's more, the study found that the average IT pro with both an M.B.A. and experience earned no more than one with an M.B.A. alone.
