Morning Buzz: Feb. 22, 2008

Hillary Clinton, for better or worse, had the sound bite of the night in Thursday's Democratic presidential debate in Austin. "If your candidacy is going to be about words then they should be your own words," she said, speaking to Barack Obama. "Lifting whole passages from someone else's speeches is not change you can believe in, it's change you can Xerox." The remark prompted boos from some in the audience. more >>

Morning Buzz: Jan. 11, 2008

The six candidates for the Republican presidential nomination sparred last night over economic and national security issues during a 90-minute debate in South Carolina. The debate, sponsored by Fox News, was a relatively tame affair, with substantial policy disagreement but few personal attacks. One notable exception: a tit-for-tat between former Sen. Fred Thompson and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee. At one point, Thompson warned that Huckabee, if elected, would take the country in the direction of "liberal economic policies." Huckabee responded: "The Air Force has a saying that if you're not catching flak, you're not over the target. I'm catching the flak. I must be over the target." more >>

Democrats Demand: 'Stand Up'

Most of the chatter surrounding tonight's Democratic presidential debate in Las Vegas is being focused on Hillary Clinton and her bruised but certainly still front-running campaign. And perhaps rightfully so. But for the linguistically savvy debate-watcher out there, here's a more nuanced trend worth following: the rise of "standing up" as the political catchphrase of the moment. more >>

And Now, the Real 2008 Debates

They're a year away, but the upcoming 2008 presidential debates are drawing heated competition between cities and colleges eager to host one of the four planned events. Frank Fahrenkopf, cochair of the Commission on Presidential Debates, says that unlike in some past years, every region of the nation is well represented on the final list of 12 applicants, and some of the regular venues, like Washington University in St. more >>
